What started out as a trip to the Burrup Peninsula to view ancient aboriginal rock art, ended up as a new business venture, for me.
The colours of the outback are just so amazing. From the reddest iron ores, to the yellow and orange ochres, the colours appear more vibrant, under those majestic blue skies. The trip left me so inspired I just had to create my latest range of textiles with the outback in mind.
So together with another silk artist, Irene Borland from Scarborough, we formed The Bluddy Muddy Outback Company, and have been up to our elbows in it ever since.

We researched various methods for dying fabric with mud and coloured dyes, and have come up with a range of T shirts and cotton scarves, that symbolize the vibrant colours of the desert and earths tones of the outback. Our mutual love of silk, lead to us embellishing the T shirts with hand stitched silk appliquéd designs, which makes each one unique. They are so original and different that we name and number each shirt, which makes each one like a collectable abstract painting. This is wearable art at its best.

Working out of Marlene’s studio at The Old Royal George Community Arts Centre in East Fremantle we are producing unisex and ladies shirts in all sizes. All processes from the dying to hand stitching designs, are carried out by us on the premises. The shirts are made out of lightweight cotton and are really cool and comfortable to wear. The scarves come in all colours and are made out of 100% cotton muslin, finished off with hand knotted beaded corners. They are also very easy to wear. We wanted to create something really Australian, but with world wide appeal and we have.
